Getting Started with the NDIS: Finding an NDIS Provider Minto Families Can Rely On

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) helps Australians living with disability get the support they need to live well and work towards their goals. If you or someone you love is just beginning the journey, here is a clear, step-by-step guide for local families.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is an Australian Government scheme that provides funding to eligible people with a permanent and significant disability. It works a little like an insurance model: rather than a single, one-size-fits-all service, every participant receives an individual plan and budget. That means your supports are built around your own goals, whether that is living more independently, building everyday skills, finding and keeping work, or taking a fuller part in community life. You can read a friendly overview on our NDIS page, or check the official details at ndis.gov.au.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility comes down to your age, residency and disability. In general, you may be able to access the NDIS if you:

  • Are under 65 years of age when you apply
  • Are an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa
  • Live with a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities

Children under the age of 9 who have a developmental delay can also get help through the NDIS early childhood approach, even without a formal diagnosis. If you are unsure whether you qualify, it is always worth asking rather than assuming you are not eligible.

Making an access request

To begin, contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on 1800 800 110, or visit ndis.gov.au to make an access request. You will be asked for some personal details and for evidence of your disability from your GP, specialists or allied health professionals. Families across the Macarthur region often find it pays to gather these reports early, as they form the foundation of your very first plan and can help the process along.

Preparing for your planning meeting

Once your access request is approved, you will have a planning conversation with the NDIA or a Local Area Coordinator. This is your chance to describe your day-to-day life, so a little preparation goes a long way. Before the meeting, think about what is working well, what feels difficult, and what you would like to achieve over the next year or two. Practical examples make a real difference, so consider:

  • The tasks you need a hand with at home or out in the community
  • Any equipment or assistive technology that would make life easier
  • Goals such as catching public transport, cooking, studying or working

Jot your thoughts down beforehand, because it is easy to forget things on the day. Family members, carers or an advocate are all welcome to join you.

Understanding your funding categories

Your approved plan sets out your goals and the funding you have been allocated. That funding usually sits in three broad categories:

  • Core supports — everyday assistance such as help with personal care, daily tasks and getting out into the community
  • Capacity Building — supports that build your skills and independence over time, including therapies and help finding work
  • Capital — larger items like assistive equipment, technology and home modifications

You will also decide how your plan is managed. It can be self-managed, plan-managed through a provider who handles the paperwork, or managed by the NDIA. Each option offers a different balance of choice and administration, and you can talk it through at your planning meeting.

Choosing your local supports

This is the part where you are firmly in control. You choose who delivers your supports, and you can change providers if something is not the right fit. Many families prefer to begin with an NDIS provider Minto locals already know and can meet face to face, because a nearby team understands the neighbourhood, the transport links and the community groups right on your doorstep. Divine Care Group offers a range of NDIS and Aged Care services, and our support workers travel throughout the Macarthur region and across Southwest and Western Sydney. You can see the full list on our services page.

How do I apply for the NDIS?

Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or visit ndis.gov.au to make an access request, then gather supporting evidence from your doctor. Once you are approved, you will move on to a planning meeting to shape your first plan.

Can I choose my own provider?

Yes. Under the NDIS you decide who delivers your supports, and you can switch at any time if your needs change. As an NDIS provider Minto families can reach easily, Divine Care is happy to walk you through your options with no pressure at all.

Do I need a support coordinator?

If support coordination is funded in your plan, a coordinator can help you find and connect with the right services. If it is not funded, a good provider will still guide you through service agreements and explain how everything works.
